Stumbling Upon A D.J. At City Lights Books

I had a quintessential San Francisco evening a few days ago: I was cycling through North Beach and as I passed City Lights Bookstore on Columbus Avenue I spied a crowd gathered inside the store; obviously a reading of some kind was going on and I stopped to have a look.

Turns out it was none other than DJ Spooky/That Subliminal Kid reading from a book he had just edited as well as telling fascinating stories about his enviable life of traveling the world recording music, mixing music, making installations, and acquiring recordings.

He passed out CD’s of a mixmash he had recently edited of African songs which in turn he had assembled on a recent trip to Angola, and he pitched his new book entitled Sound Unsound, a compilation of essays about culture, technology and art.

But the part I liked most was his stories of how he went to Antarctica to record breaking sea ice for a film and record he is making.

I’m listening to the African music CD now, and a trailer for the Antarctica film is here:
